Product & Studio Shoot

How to Take Product Shoots

1. Choosing the Right Equipment
  • CAMERAS: DSLRs or mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses are preferred.
  • SMARTPHONES: Budget-friendly option that often have multiple lenses, manual mode, and allows for the ability to shoot in RAW format, giving more flexibility in post-processing.

2. Tripod and Mounts
  • A sturdy tripod is essential for keeping the camera stable and eliminates camera shake, especially when shooting with slower shutter speeds or in low light conditions.

3. Lighting
  • Proper lighting is key to creating visually appealing product photos.
  • Continuous lighting solutions, such as LED panels or soft boxes, provide a constant light source that allows for seeing how the light falls on the product in real-time.

4. Preparing the Scene
  • Involves selecting appropriate backgrounds, setting up light sources strategically, and arranging the product to showcase its best features.

5. Selecting Backgrounds
  • Use a background light that complements the product without overpowering it.
  • Ensure the background provides enough contrast to make the product stand out.
  • Consider using different textures and materials like wood, fabric, or marble to add visual interest.

6. Setting up Light Sources
  • NATURAL LIGHT: set up shot near a large window to take advantage of soft, diffused light.
  • ARTIFICIAL LIGHT: position main light source at a 45-degree angle to the product to create attractive shadows and highlight textures.
  • Experiment with different lighting setups to find what works best for a specific product, adjust until desired effect is achieved.

7. Arranging the Product
  • Place the product in the centre of the background, ensuring it is well-lit and in focus.
  • Use odd numbers and vary the heights and angles of the product.
  • Pay attention to small details like alignment, spacing, and cleanliness of the product.

Photo Shooting Techniques

1. Using a Tripod
  • Maintains consistency in shots and ensures sharp and clear images.
  • Frees up hands and makes it easier to adjust products or make subtle changes.

2. Finding the Right Angles
  • EYE-LEVEL SHOTS: mimics how customers would see them in-store.
  • 45-DEGREE ANGLE: shows multiple sides in a single shot.
  • TOP DOWN / FLAT LAY: showcases multiple items at once.
  • CLOSE-UPS / MACRO SHOTS: highlights unique qualities and craftsmanship.

TUTORIAL

PRACTICAL

Mr. Fitri instructed us to begin with the first part of this task, which is to start with our research. We should have a reference moodboard, 5 summaries, and sketches of our ideas.

Figure 2.1 Reference Moodboard (Sources: Reference 1, Reference 2, Reference 3)Week 6 (29/10/2025)

I picked these few because most of the objects used are everyday household items, and I didn't want to stress too much about searching for something not so common.

After I was done with the moodboard, I searched around my house for a few objects, mainly ones with similar shapes, or things that could be merged together to create a new meaning.

IDEA SUMMARIES

IDEA #1:
Tape Dispenser + CD - Visual wordplay on audio/video tape.

IDEA #2:
Battery + Soda Can - Can be combined to form an energy drink.

IDEA #3:
Toaster + Bag Straps - Could be an unusual novelty handbag.

IDEA #4:
Lemon + Perfume Tip - Highlights the strong scents of lemon by being used as perfume.

IDEA #5:
Pliers + Pencils - Both have similar shapes but with no particular meaning.

EXTRAS (NOT SELECTED)

IDEA #6:
Lip Balm + Blade - Makes for a convenient compact blade.

IDEA #7:
Ruler + Belt - Can be used as an accessory as well as a useful measuring tool.

I continued by roughly sketching out the (selected) ideas mentioned above.

REFLECTION

This week was pretty busy due to the submission of a different module, so I feel like some ideas are a little basic. However, I think it'll make the process easier in the long run. It took me a while of rummaging around my house to find objects of similar shapes that I was happy with, but I quite like the options I ended up with.
