3. REFLECTION
Experience
Throughout the whole semester, this class slowly but surely became one of my favourites. I enjoyed exploring and experimenting with fonts, even though the process was sometimes stressful due to my own poor time management and tendency to start tasks late. There were moments when I felt my work could have been better, but I still pushed myself to refine it to an outcome I was satisfied with.
Besides that, having a limited selection of only 10 fonts was pretty challenging at first, as it restricted many of my initial ideas. However, this limitation taught me how to adapt, be more intentional with my choices, and explore the full potential of each typeface, which helped me learn more about typography overall.
Observations
I found the feedback sessions to be especially helpful, particularly when they were shared with the whole class, even if it was a little nerve-racking at first. Hearing the feedback given to my other classmates allowed me to look back on my own work and improve it based on what was said. Observing the different approaches from my classmates also gave me new ideas on how typography could be used in various ways, and how the possibilities for type are endless. On top of that, the limited use of graphical elements made the class more challenging and interesting, and it also encouraged me to pay closer attention to small details, such as spacing and alignment, which can completely change the overall effect of a design. This made me more careful and thoughtful when designing my own work.
Findings
This module helped me realise how much attention to detail goes into typography and layout designs. I became more aware of how spacing, hierarchy, and alignment affect readability and meaning. Not only that, but being restricted from using images most of the time encouraged me to communicate my ideas using type alone, which I would say strengthened my problem-solving skills and will be useful in my future design projects. Additionally, designing my own font taught me the importance of consistency, as each letter had to work together while remaining clear and expressive. Overall, I'd say this module gave me a better eye for typography, improving both my technical skills and creative thinking, and showing me that even simple type can be effective when used thoughtfully.
